Crash Alert: Icy conditions complicate AFD response to apartment fire

AUSTIN, TX – Icy conditions brought on by the winter storms gripping Central Texas complicated the Austin Fire Department’s response to an apartment fire on Brodie Lane yesterday.

KXAN reports that frozen pipes and fire hydrants impeded firefighters’ progress as they combatted a blaze that had broken out at an apartment complex located at 6607 Brodie Lane late Thursday morning. Challenges also arose from Capital Metro’s suspension of service on Monday, which meant that the department had trouble transporting the residents that firefighters had rescued from 20 evacuated units.

The conflagration was one of three structure fires AFD responded to yesterday which they believe originated from improperly maintained fireplaces.
