Crash Alert: More killed on Austin roads in 2020 despite fewer driver

AUSTIN, TX – According to The Austin Monitor, more people died on Austin roads in 2020 than in the previous five years.

94 people were killed on Autin roads last year, up from 88 deaths in 2019. This is despite the fact that few drivers were on the road due to Covid-19. There were fewer serious injuries reported due to Austin crashes, indicating that the accidents that did occur were deadlier.

Authorities believe that since there were few drivers, cars were able to drive faster and cause more severe crashes.

Roughly 1/5th of traffic fatalities last year took place on I-35 or its frontage roads.

Speed is considered a major factor in the seriousness of last year’s car accidents. In response, the city has approved a plan to lower speed limits on many roadways. The plan will not affect highways, which are managed by the state.
